Ethereum classic was originated when the Ethereum blockchain forked to stop the theft of the Ethers that were locked in the prestigious DAO contract. Due to an error in the DAO code an attacker was able to steal a large amount of Ethers. To stop the attack a hard fork was deployed. Ethereum classic uses the same code as Ethereum did before the hard fork that was deployed to retrieve the stolen coins in the DAO hack.
